The stock market indices had a very tough opening as they gapped down sharply. They rallied back sharply, made lower lows on the S&P 500, and when the Nasdaq 100 didn't do so, they held support and rallied back in a 5-wave advance, taking the indices substantially into the plus column. But in the last couple hours they backed off again finishing negatively for the day.

Net on the day, the Dow was down 40.31 at 17,678.23, about 100 off the lows and about 80 points off the high. The S&P 500 was down 4.90 at 2056.15. The Nasdaq 100 was down 14.03 at 4315.26.

Advance-declines were still 3 to 2 negative on the New York Stock Exchange, and 5 to 4 negative on Nasdaq. Up/down volume was a little less than 2 to 1 negative on New York, with total volume of 3.4 billion shares. Nasdaq traded close to 2 billion shares, and had a 11 to 9 negative volume ratio.
