The stock market indices started out with a bang, and although the blue chips didn't do as well, the Nasdaq 100 was the star today.

The day started out with a gap up, and the Nasdaq 100 just kept going up in a rising channel all day. The S&P 500, however, stalled at 2070, a point below Friday's all-time high, and then went sideways, consolidated, and support held all day, only to see it rally back toward the highs for the day.

Net on the day, the Dow was up 7.84 at 17,817.90. The S&P 500 was up 5.91 at 2069.41. The Nasdaq 100 was up 32.99 at 4284.32.

Advance-declines were 3 to 2 positive on the New York Stock Exchange, and 2 1/2 to 1 positive on Nasdaq. Up/down volume was slightly positive on New York, with total volume of 3 billion shares. Nasdaq traded 1.5 billion shares, and had a 3 1/2 to 1 positive volume ratio.

Stepping back and reviewing the hourly chart patterns, the indices gapped up and channeled up all day on the Nasdaq 100. They had a stellar start to the week, but are right on key overhead resistance at last week's highs as is the S&P 500. If it blows through here they could have a short-covering rally.

Let's see what happens tomorrow.
