May’s letter to Tusk proposes Brexit extension until 30 June 2019

According to the latest headlines floating on the wires, the UK PM Theresa May's letter to the EU President Donald Tusk proposes Brexit extension until 30 June 2019. The letter also states that if any deal is ratified before this date, the period should be terminated early and that the UK will make preparations to hold European elections.

This comes after the Buzzfeed European editor, Alberto Nardelli, tweeted in the last hour: "I'm told there have been conversations between Brussels and EU capitals, and between EU and UK officials. i.e. everyone is in the loop. However, I am also told by senior European gov't officials that not all leaders are (yet) on board with the idea of a long flexible extension."

This, along with concerns about the Fed's independence and prospects for further policy easing by the US central bank, drags the US Dollar to a four-year low and favors the XAU/USD bulls ahead of the crucial FOMC rate decision later this Wednesday.

Four problems of the US Dollar

The US Dollar Index returned to last year's lower bound, which we had not seen since 2022. The drivers are investment portfolio diversification, concerns about the US economic growth slowdown, rumours of FX interventions and active selling by carry-traders.
