Mid-day market update: Crude Oil up 5%; Macquarie Infrastructure shares plunge

Midway through trading Friday, the Dow traded down 1.13% to 21,171.23 while the NASDAQ fell 0.93% to 7,417.51. The S&P also fell, dropping 0.95% to 2,502.90.

The U.S. is now the epicenter of the coronavirus pandemic with the highest number of cases around the world. U.S. reported a total of 245,500 coronavirus cases with around 6,000 deaths. Spain confirmed a total of over 117,700 coronavirus cases with 10,900 deaths, while Italy reported a total of at least 115,200 confirmed cases and 13,900 deaths. In total, there are at least 1,026,900 cases of COVID-19 worldwide with over 53,900 deaths, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University.

Leading and Lagging Sectors

Consumer staples shares rose 0.02% on Friday. Meanwhile, top gainers in the sector included Nu Skin Enterprises, Inc. NUS 9.4%, up 7%, and United Natural Foods, Inc. UNFI 2.82%, up 5%.

In trading on Friday, communication services shares fell 1.7%.

Top Headline

On Friday, the Bureau of Labor Statistics released employment data for the month of March, and the numbers were staggering.

The nonfarm payroll number came in at -701,000, well worse than consensus economist expectations of -100,000. The unemployment rate increased 0.9% to 4.4%.

Equities Trading UP

PaySign, Inc. PAYS 9.31% shares shot up 10% to $4.4450 after the company reported full-year results.

Shares of Xinyuan Real Estate Co., Ltd. XIN 9.35% got a boost, shooting 12% to $2.34 after the company reported Q4 results. The company’s earnings came in at $0.62 per share on revenue of $906.7 million.

electroCore, Inc. ECOR 33.97% shares were also up, gaining 55% to $1.16 after the company announced it has submitted an Emergency Use Authorization application to the FDA to allow the study and use of gammaCore nvVNS therapy to treat respiratory symptoms associated with the coronavirus.

Equities Trading DOWN

Macquarie Infrastructure Corporation MIC 26.32% shares tumbled 26% to $17.70 after the company announced it will suspend its quarterly dividend and withdraw its guidance. RBC Capital also downgraded the company's stock from Outperform to Sector Perform and lowered its price target from $34 to $26.

Shares of Ladder Capital Corp LADR 24.84% were down 32% to $3.1250 after B. Riley downgraded the stock from Buy to Neutral and lowered its price target from $19 to $7.50 per share.

Sigma Labs, Inc. SGLB 21.6% was down, falling 16% to $2.42. Sigma Labs reported pricing of $1.5 million offering of common stock and warrants.

Commodities

In commodity news, oil traded up 5.1% to $26.61, while gold traded up 0.2% to $1,641.00.

Silver traded down 0.9% Friday to $14.53, while copper fell 1.4% to $2.188.

Euro zone

European shares were mostly lower today. The eurozone’s STOXX 600 fell 0.72% the Spanish Ibex Index rose 0.47%, while Italy’s FTSE MIB Index dropped 1.72%. Meanwhile, the German DAX dropped 0.36%, and the French CAC 40 fell 1.28% while UK shares fell 0.96%.

Economics

The US economy lost 701,000 jobs in March, while unemployment rate surged to 4.4%.

US Services Purchasing Managers' Index fell to 39.8 in March, versus February’s reading of 49.4.

The ISM non-manufacturing PMI declined to 52.5 in March, versus 57.3 in the prior month.

The Baker Hughes North American rig count report for the latest week is scheduled for release at 1:00 p.m. ET.

The United States Bureau of Economic Analysis will publish the first preliminary estimate of the fourth-quarter Gross Domestic Product at 13:30 GMT. Analysts forecast the US economy to have expanded at a 3% annualized rate, slowing down from the 4.4% growth posted in the previous quarter.

Iran tensions and AI fears at the forefront ahead of key US data

Thursday’s scorecard shows major US Stock benchmarks closed modestly in the red amid mounting US-Iran tensions and AI disruption worries. The S&P 500 shed 19 points (0.3%) to 6,861, the Nasdaq 100 lost 101 points (0.4%) to 24,797, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 267 points (0.5%) to 49,395.

Official Trump price approaches breakout with mixed signals from traders
