Asia market update: Light, directionless day in Asia bookends several days of extreme vol; Focus on US Jan ISM Services PMI.

General trend and developments

- Equities in Asia were mixed, with Kospi to another record high while Nikkei came off its own record highs yesterday to underperform -0.9%.

- Precious metals continued their recovery, with Gold retaking the $5,000 handle, up to $5,085/oz.

- Australia 3-year yields +4bps while New Zealand 2-year yields -4bps after a higher unemployment rate, although employment figures were up. AUD/NZD holding 116 handle.

- China RatingDog Services PMI largely in-line with estimates and the prior for a 35th month of expansion.

- Bank of Japan 10-25 year total bids in today’s outright bond buying operation saw ¥384.0B bid but only ¥95.0B taken up by the BOJ, or about 4x.

- Note that last night’s US JOLTS jobs data has been delayed due to the mini-govt shutdown in the US (now over after the House and Pres Trump signed the temporary govt spending package into law - until the Fall of this year).

- Chipmaker AMD punished -8% after hours on topline beats but unimpressive Q1 revenue forecast, feeding into the wider narrative of slower AI growth trajectory than previously anticipated.

- US equity FUTs 0.0% to 0.1% during Asia trading.

Gold and silver recovery continues, but equities sink as tech is shunned

The risk recovery is on pause as we move through Tuesday. After signs that a recovery in precious metals could boost overall risk appetite earlier today, a nasty sell off in tech stocks has pushed the Nasdaq and the S&P 500 down by 1.7% and 1.1% respectively.
