Yen gains may facilitate the BoJ’s work
Asia market update: JP data appear inline with rate expectations; Yen gains may facilitate the BOJ’s work; CN trade surplus likely to attract attention from Trump; Upcoming RBA speakers confronted with weak data; Oil rises as the Saudis commented on attacks on Tues.
General trend and developments
- Saudi Energy Ministry noted energy facilities were targeted in the Southern region on Sept 8th's morning. As a result, operations at "several" energy sites have been halted.
-Recent Japan data releases appear consistent with the Sept BOJ rate hike expectations [Jul Real Wages]. However, the weaker than expected upward revision in GDP, also, seems to be consistent with a 25bps BOJ move, as opposed to something larger, perhaps 50bps. The BOJ would have less work to do if markets oblige and help the central bank through the FX channel. The Yen has extended gains on Tues. Meanwhile, Finance Minister Katayama has suggested that mortgage rates might be becoming restrictive. USD/JPY extended its decline in Asia, falling a further -0.3% to 153.80 [the lowest level since mid-Feb].
-Japanese cos. play down China’s move to raise import tariffs on silicon. Equity investors seem to agree. China announced preliminary anti-dumping move that imposes import deposits of up to 99.2% on Japanese dichlorosilane, a high-purity silicon precursor used in semiconductor manufacturing. Japanese companies such as Shin-Etsu and Nippon Sanso noted that the product represents only a small share of their overall business and expect limited earnings impact. On the other hand, Japan’s Chief Cabinet Secretary Kihara criticized the measure as defying international norms and pledged to prevent undue effects on Japanese firms, whilst Japan’s Trade Minister Akazawa stated that the government would look into the impact of China’s anti-dumping measures.
-China’s August foreign reserves readings rose above estimates to $3.438T (vs. $3.427T expected) and Hong Kong’s August foreign reserves reading declined to $442.9B from $447.9B in July. China’s August foreign reserves readings indicated that gold reserves increased to $350.1B from $306.4B m/m as holdings rose to 76.73M troy oz from 76.08M troy oz m/m, marking the 22nd consecutive month of gold purchases. The continuation of gold accumulation from China’s PBOC in Hong Kong to support trading hubs comes amid the backdrop of Hong Kong’s newly launched central gold clearing and settlement system (trial operations began in early-July) and its “Delivery Connect” link with the Shanghai Gold Exchange.
-At the same time, China’ rise in FX reserves reflected the country’s massive trade surplus, which rose m/m to >$119B in Aug. The trade surplus alone with the US widened to $29.2B v $28.0B m/m. China’s large surplus is expected to be a key topic when Trump and Xi hold their expected Sept meeting. China’s rare earth exports and soybean imports rose m/m during Aug. We ponder whether this has positive implications for the fragile US/China trade truce. Recall, Chinese executives may join President Xi's US trip, according to the SCMP [Aug 28th]. This comes as the two sides prepare to extend a one-year trade agreement reached in Busan [South Korea] last October 2025, said the newspaper.
- China’s August CPI and PPI are due tonight [September 8th, 2026], US August PPI along with the ECB’s interest-rate decision on Thursday [September 10th, 2026], and US August CPI and core CPI releases on Friday [September 11th, 2026].
-Australian confidence data battered by inflation and property market concerns.
-RBA Assistant Governor Hunter stated that the housing market remains an immediate impact channel from monetary policy decisions and that the RBA is paying ‘very close’ attention to rents in CPI, while noting that Australian recession is not the baseline forecast. This comes after the September Westpac Consumer Confidence Index fell to 84.4 (vs. 88.9 prior) as the housing downturn weighed on homeowner and homebuyer sentiment, and additionally, after Bathla [collapsed property developer] reached a short-term funding agreement with 5 lenders on 6 September. Westpac now sees the RBA raising cash rate by +25bps in November, RBA Deputy Governor Hauser is scheduled to speak later at 4:30am ET which would provide further clarity on rate path probabilities.
-Over the EU market open, Eurozone Q2 Final GDP growth recorded at +0.6% q/q (vs. +0.4% expected) and +1.2% y/y (vs. +1.0% expected), while employment growth remained unchanged from its preliminary reading at +0.1% q/q and +0.5% y/y respectively. Within the region, Germany’s July industrial production fell -1.1% m/m (vs. +0.2% expected) and -1.6% y/y (vs. +0.0% expected), underscoring continued weakness in the industrial sector.
-US equity FUTs +0.0% to +0.5% during Asia trading.
