Risk appetite supported by 'positive' US/CN talks and the continued decline in Oil prices

Asia market update: Risk appetite supported by ‘positive’ US/CN talks and the continued decline in oil prices; US and China working groups are expected to continue talks on Mon.

General trend and developments

- US Treasury Sec Bessent made seemingly positive remarks after the talks with Chinese officials. He characterized the talks as ‘very successful’ as certain issues are now proceeding to the ‘operational’ phase [including the previously floated ‘Board of Trade’].
-In May, Bessent stated the US and China would initially identify $30B of non-critical goods subject for reduced or no tariffs under the established Board of Trade protocol.

- USTR Greer said he expects to see energy products, agricultural goods and possibly medical devices on the list [in terms of the US side]. Consumer goods and low tech items are expected to be included in the Board of Trade from the Chinese side.

- Greer, also, confirmed export controls were not on the agenda. [China’s Aug shipments of magnets to the US -21% m/m to 512 tons; cites China customs.] A key focal point has been the fragile trade truce between the US and China. Recall, Chinese executives are expected to join Chinese President Xi's US trip, according to the SCMP [Aug 28th]. This comes as the two sides prepare to extend a one-year trade agreement reached in Busan [South Korea] last October 2025, said the newspaper. The US and China working groups are expected to continue talks on Monday.

- Bessent added he is likely to meet with a Chinese delegation in Nov as no agreement was reached on the prior trade truce [FT].

- Hang Seng Biotech index rallies by 5% on upbeat trade news. The US is reportedly working on rules for pharmaceutical companies investing in China that would likely preserve their ability to strike most licensing deals for Chinese drugs [press]. On Friday, Chinese pharma names were supported by the publication of the 5-year plan for the industry [China released the 15th 5-year plan related to the development of the pharmaceutical industry which targets CNY3.5T in pharma industry revenue by 2030].

- Overall, amid the extended Japan holiday [Sept 21-23rd], equity markets have gradually improved in Asia. Drivers include the US/China trade talks and lower oil prices.

- De-escalation talk continues to help drive oil prices lower. On Fri, Trump reiterated the Iran war is going to end very soon. He, further, confirmed the US is talking to the Houthis. Trump is reportedly scheduled to hold talks at the UN General Assembly in NY with Gulf leaders on Tuesday [September 22nd, 2026]. The meeting is expected to include leaders from Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait and Oman [Axios from Sept 16th].

- Trading in USD/JPY has been quiet with the extended Japanese holidays. After Friday’s rate hike announcement from the BOJ, the central bank is also said to have conducted FX rate checks [press report from Friday’s NY morning] (https://asia.nikkei.com/business/markets/currencies/boj-conducts-rate-check-lifting-yen-to-upper-156-range-against-dollar).

AUD/USD sticks to neutral bias above 0.7100 amid cautious markets

AUD/USD holds steady above 0.7100 in the Asian session on Monday as the US Dollar stalls its modest pullback from the highest level since late July amid persistent geopolitical uncertainties. The PBOC status quo on Loan Prime Rates also weighs on the Aussie. However, bets on another RBA rate hike continue to underpin the Australian Dollar ahead of the Trump-Xi Summit.

USD/JPY eases below 157.00 amid looming intervention risks

USD/JPY is easing back below 157.00 in Asia on Monday, undermined by modest Japanese Yen strength amid looming intervention risks after Friday's BoJ rate check. A Japanese holiday also keeps traders on edge amid escalating geopolitical tensions between Russia and Ukraine and in the Middle East. As a result, the US Dollar pauses its pullback, limiting the pair's downside.

Gold: Sellers test $4,350 on renewed USD upside

Gold kicks off the new week on a weaker note following Friday's failure near the $4,400 mark. The commodity currently trades near the $4,350 level as traders await further developments surrounding the Middle East crisis and their implications for inflation. This would influence interest rate expectations and, in turn, drive the non-yielding bullion.

Dogecoin extends gains as ETF inflows return and momentum improves

Dogecoin extends its recovery, trading above $0.088 after gaining nearly 6% last week. The bullish price outlook is supported by the return of institutional demand through DOGE spot Exchange Traded Funds. Meanwhile, improving momentum indicators and signs of whale accumulation suggest a positive outlook for the dog-themed meme coin.

Economics week ahead

This week is light on the domestic data front, with focus on Thursday's new home sales report. We expect sales to partially recover in August, rising 2.6% to a 623K pace after a sharp decline in July. Higher mortgage rates continue to weigh on affordability and demand, though builder incentives remained in place and conditions did not worsen materially during the month.

BoJ Recap: Not as hawkish as expected

The Bank of Japan (BoJ) raised its short-term interest-rate target to 1.25% from 1.00% in a 7-2 vote, marking another step in the normalisation of monetary policy and widely matching what everyone has been expecting for weeks.
