EU mid-market update: German ZEW survey paints the picture the worst is behind on the country in terms of economic performance; UK wage data mixed.
Notes/observations
- Slight risk on tones ahead of US Oct CPI later with equities holding in the green and US dollar dipping. Release is highly anticipated, as traders see a high reading bringing a hike back on the table for Fed, while a lower reading cementing terminal rate at current level. Expecting US Oct Retail Sales on Wed as another key indicator of state of US economy and consumer health.
- UK employment and wage data took focus in EU morning trade, showing slowing employment growth while wage growth remained high. Analysts noted data did little to change market expectations of Bank of England rate path in 2024.
- Asia closed mixed with KOSPI outperforming at +1.2%. EU indices are -0.3% to +0.4%. US futures are +0.1-0.3%. Gold +0.1%, DXY -0.1%; Commodity: Brent 0.0%, WTI 0.0%, TTF -3.1%; Crypto: BTC -1.3%, ETH -0.3%.

- BOJ Dir General of Monetary Affairs Dept Masaki stated that did not see long-term interest rates greatly exceeding 1.00% even with rising pressure.
- BOJ Uchida declined to comment on FX levels; Wanted to continue to support economic. Reiterated key is whether wages rise to support consumer spending.
- Japan Fin Min Suzuki reiterated stance that excessive FX moves were undesirable.
- Japan's govt was said to be considering tax breaks for firms that granted 8% wage increases.

- Treasury Sec Yellen stated that she had productive meetings with China Fin Min Lan Foan this week; She noted that she disagreed with Moody's decision to lower the US sovereign outlook to negative.

- IEA Monthly Oil Report raised the 2023 global oil demand growth from 2.3M to 2,4M bpd and also raised the 2024 global oil demand growth from 880K to 930K bpd. It did not see any material impact on supply from Israel-Hamas war.
Currencies/fixed income
- USD price action was lackluster ahead of the US CPI data due out later in the session. Dealers noted that a sufficient fall in inflation would cement expectations that the Fed rate-hiking cycle was over; while a higher-than-expected reading could make another rate increase likely.
- UK unemployment and wage data were the focus for the GBP. Dealers noted that UK slower wage growth increased the chances the Bank of England might cut rates in the first half of 2024. Markets currently pricing just a one-in-five chance of a further rate hike this cycle, while continuing to see the first 25bp cut in Aug next year.
- EUR/USD drifted above the 1.07 level as German ZEW Survey painted a picture that the worst was behind the country in terms of economic performance.
- USD/JPY staying below the 152 level for the time being. Dealers note that BOJ’s ultra-easy monetary policy settings remained at odds with the prospect of higher-for-longer rates elsewhere. There remains concerns over Japanese FX intervention by numerous govt officials won’t comment on current levels. Dealers keenly aware that back in October 2022 the BOJ did intervene to cap yen currency weakness just under the 132 level.
