British Pound declines ahead of UK Finance Minister Healey's budget
- UK Finance Minister John Healey faces pressure to ease living costs despite limited fiscal room.
- Markets expect the Fed to keep interest rates steady ahead of upcoming economic data.
- Improving AI sentiment and upcoming tech earnings reduced demand for US Treasury bonds.
GBP/USD continues its losing streak for the fourth consecutive day, trading around 1.3290 during Asian hours on Wednesday. Traders are waiting for UK Finance Minister John Healey to present his first budget later in the day.
UK Finance Minister Healey faces mounting pressure to deliver measures that can ease the ongoing cost-of-living burden on households while simultaneously providing much-needed support to businesses across the country.
However, Healey’s policy options remain severely constrained. The minister must navigate tight fiscal boundaries driven by elevated government borrowing costs and the substantial tax increases previously implemented by his predecessor, Rachel Reeves.
The GBP/USD depreciates as the US Dollar (USD) gains ground amid market caution ahead of the US Federal Reserve’s (Fed) interest rate decision due later in the day. Investors are also closely monitoring key economic releases, including GDP growth and the Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) price index, for further clues regarding the future path of monetary policy.
The Fed is widely expected to keep its benchmark interest rate unchanged at the current target range of 3.75% to 4.0% on Wednesday. According to the CME FedWatch tool, markets are pricing in a 92.8% probability of a rate hold at this meeting, while the probability of a rate hike in December stands at 84.4%. Traders will be paying sharp attention to Fed Chair Kevin Warsh’s remarks for any subtle hints regarding the central bank's economic outlook.
Meanwhile, demand for safe-haven Treasury bonds has weakened as market sentiment surrounding artificial intelligence improves. Upcoming earnings reports from major technology companies are expected to provide fresh insight into AI-related demand—a sector that has been a significant driver of US economic growth—reversing some of the safe-haven flows triggered by the recent global tech sell-off.
Technical Analysis:
In the daily chart, GBP/USD trades at 1.3290, holding a capped tone as spot remains under the short-term Exponential Moving Average (EMA) at 1.3323 and the 50-day EMA at 1.3351. The alignment of price below both the nine-day and 50-day EMAs suggests that the recent recovery attempt is losing traction, keeping the broader downside structure intact, while the 14-day Relative Strength Index (RSI) near 46 hints at fading but not yet oversold bearish momentum.
On the topside, initial resistance is now aligned at the nine-day EMA, with a subsequent barrier at the 50-day EMA, where a daily close above would be needed to ease immediate downside pressure and open the way for a more sustained rebound. Until those moving averages are reclaimed, the pair is likely to remain vulnerable to renewed selling interest on rallies, with traders watching price action around these EMA caps for clues on whether bears retain control.
