AUD/USD Price Forecast: Holds below 0.7000, near two-week low ahead of RBA decision

  • AUD/USD consolidates its recent losses to a two-week low, touched during the Asian session.
  • Traders now seem hesitant to place fresh directional bets and opt to wait for the RBA decision.
  • The mixed technical setup further warrants some caution before positioning for further losses.

The AUD/USD pair enters a bearish consolidation phase below the 0.7000 psychological mark after touching a fresh two-week low during the Asian session on Tuesday as traders now look to the crucial Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) rate decision for a fresh impetus.

The Australian central bank is widely expected to deliver a 25-basis-point (bps) interest rate hike, marking its fifth rate increase of the year amid the worsening inflation outlook. Traders will further take cues from the accompanying policy statement and RBA Governor Michele Bullock's comments during the post-meeting press conference to gauge whether this will be the peak of the current tightening cycle or if restrictive policy will need to linger longer. Apart from this, the focus will be on US midterm elections, which might infuse some volatility and produce short-term opportunities around the AUD/USD pair.

From a technical perspective, spot prices retain a near-term bearish tone following the recent failed attempt to build on the strength beyond the 200-day Simple Moving Average (SMA) at 0.7058. Meanwhile, the Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD) is slightly positive, and the Relative Strength Index (RSI) sits around 46, hinting at mildly improving momentum. However, the AUD/USD pair's location beneath the key Fibonacci retracement cluster starting at the 38.2% Fibo. level at 0.7027 suggests that rallies are likely to remain vulnerable and that the path of least resistance for spot prices is to the downside.

In the meantime, initial support emerges at the 23.6% retracement at 0.6977, ahead of a more important structural floor around 0.6896, where a break would likely reinstate heavier bearish pressure. On the topside, immediate resistance is located at the 38.2% Fibo. retracement at 0.7027, followed by the 200-day SMA near 0.7058 and the 50.0% retracement at 0.7068, with higher barriers at 0.7108 and 0.7166 before the swing high at 0.7239 comes into play.

RBA Interest Rate Decision

The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) announces its interest rate decision at the end of its eight scheduled meetings per year. If the RBA is hawkish about the inflationary outlook of the economy and raises interest rates it is usually bullish for the Australian Dollar (AUD). Likewise, if the RBA has a dovish view on the Australian economy and keeps interest rates unchanged, or cuts them, it is seen as bearish for AUD.

AUD/USD drops to two-week low, further below 0.7000 after RBA's less hawkish rate hike

AUD/USD drifts lower for the second straight day on Tuesday, hitting a fresh two-week low during the Asian session after the Reserve Bank of Australia's (RBA) widely expected 25 bps rate hike. The decision was far from unanimous, with three members preferring to hold rates at 4.60%. This tempers expectations of further tightening, which, along with modest US Dollar strength, weighs on the currency pair.

USD/JPY fails near 159.00 amid weak USD, intervention risks

USD/JPY edges lower during Tuesday’s Asian session, reversing part of the previous day's gains to 158.00 as the US Dollar remains depressed amid hopes for Iran diplomacy and ahead of US midterm elections. Meanwhile, intervention risks support the Japanese Yen, though the uncertainty over the timing of the next BoJ rate hike caps gains. This keeps the pair confined within a familiar range and warrants caution before placing directional bets.

Gold consolidates near $3,950 as Fed hike bets counter weak USD ahead of US elections

Gold holds steady around $3,950 through Tuesday’s Asian session, consolidating the previous day's recovery gains from the lowest level since October 2025, touched last week. Hopes for Iran optimism keep the safe-haven US Dollar depressed, which, along with anxiety ahead of US midterm elections, supports the bullion. However, Fed rate-hike bets and a modest bounce in US bond yields cap gains for the non-yielding yellow metal.

North Korea rejects US allegations linking DPRK hackers to $6.3 billion Binance hack
North Korea has pushed back against US allegations that state-backed hackers were responsible for the $6.3 billion exploit targeting crypto exchange Binance, describing Washington's accusations as a political provocation.
What a split Congress means for the US Dollar

The United States is going to the polls on Tuesday, and much is at stake. The mid-term elections mean the renovation of roughly one-third of the Senate and all 435 of the House seats. Additionally, special elections in Florida and Ohio will be held to fill the seats vacated by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Vice President JD Vance.

The 2% inflation target came from a throwaway remark. It now moves trillions
The Federal Reserve's 2% inflation goal grew out of an off-the-cuff remark by a New Zealand politician in 1988. Bond investors still price long-term US debt as if 2% holds, so a change in how the Fed measures inflation would move markets.
