CN hits back at US by considering its own AI restrictions

Asia market update: CN hits back at US by considering its own AI restrictions; US-IR strikes escalate, even as talks appear to continue; RBNZ hikes first time in 3 years.

General trend and developments

- Hong Kong equities outperformed Asia, with the Kospi again volatile. Hang Seng +2% pulled up by the HK Tech Index +4% (Alibaba + 7%, Zhipu +18%, Tencent +4%, Baidu +5%, Hua Hong +9%, SMIC +4.7%). AI and chipmaker names were broadly up in China after Chinese authorities reportedly have been holding meetings with top China tech firms over the past month about potentially restricting overseas access to China's most advanced AI models; Flipping the script on the US govt’s decision last month to restrict foreign-national access to Anthropic’s Fable 5 / Mythos 5 models - and subsequent safeguards limiting frontier model access (including OpenAI's new GPT5.6 Sol model, now approved for release by the US govt).

- Zhipu particularly strong +18% as it joined compatriot AI model maker DeepSeek in reportedly planning to build domestically its own custom AI chips for its popular GLM model.

- Oil prices stayed at elevated levels in Asia after having moved up >$3 during the NY morning, following several fresh incidents (including the Qatari LNG tanker still on fire and at risk of explosion) in the Strait of Hormuz. The Iranian attacks led to the US Treasury revoking the June 21st allowance for sales of Iranian oil, followed later by powerful US strikes on Iranian ports, IRGC air defense facilities and >60 small fast boats. Iran kept up its fighting talk, as it once again sent drones and missiles into Bahrain and Kuwait. However, no sign yet that either side is planning to officially end the ceasefire and negotiations.

- New Zealand’s RBNZ as expected raised rates for the first time in over three years (by 25bps) but with dampened inflation expectations due to the recent fall in oil prices. The Statement did warn that some further reduction in monetary stimulus is likely to be required to return inflation to the 2% target mid-point.

- Japan reportedly considering changes to monetary policy wording in its pending 2026-27 annual economic and fiscal management plan in order to affirm independence of the BOJ [Note: Contrary to reports in late June).

- JPY again weaker, heading back towards last week’s 40-year lows vs USD even as new BOJ board member Asada moved from his dissenting stance at last month's BOJ hike to now be “not opposed to rate hikes”, adding the BOJ should respond flexibly to changes in economic, price and financial conditions. Comments come as CFTC overall net short Yen positions at ~155K contracts approach the record level of ~184K contracts seen in July, 2024, just prior to the rapid Yen appreciation from 162 to 140 at the time, roiling markets worldwide as a chunk of the Yen carry trade rapidly unwound. [Some analysts speculate it is the pace of Yen weakness that may lead to further BOJ “Yentervention” rather than any specific FX level - and perhaps now to come suddenly without verbal warnings as has been the custom since BOJ FX interventions started up again in late 2022].

- South Korea’s current account surplus hit a record high in May.

- Australia’s Telecom index -1.8% as Telstra fell up to -4% on a nationwide network outage (cause still not known).

- Further concrete signs Nvidia is looking to move up the AI stack, including at the model layer by announcing a partnership with AI chip startup d-Matrix to combine hardware in a new system to power AI models.

- Despite SpaceX being added to the Nasdaq-100 index in US trading overnight, triggering billions of dollars in institutional buying by funds correlated to the Nasdaq 100, the stock fell -5% to its post-IPOs lows - barely holding $150. Analysts cited heavy algorithmic front-running ahead of the known event for the lack of a price boost, amid a public float of only 4-5%.

- US equity FUTs flat to +0.1% during Asia trading.
