Is the 7 May second-round polling likely to change in the next two weeks? - Nomura

Analysts at Nomura explained that the second-round polling so far has been largely hypothetical as undecided voters or those who are disappointed not to see their candidate making it into the second round will now be making their choices in full knowledge of the options.

Key Quotes:

"So as undecided or disappointed voters do so, they move the polling. In the last two elections we have seen a “Sarkozy swing” toward the centre-right candidate, but as this election is being fought on less of a left-right divide we should not necessarily expect the same.

Looking through the history of second-round polling since the 1980s, even if we see the typical narrowing of 5% or so it will not be enough to worry the market. The large leads Mr Macron has in the second round in excess of 25% provide the market with that comfort as it is more than double the typical margin of error for polling leads."

AUD/USD sits above 0.7200 in the Asian session on Tuesday, near its highest level since May 14. USD/JPY fluctuates at around 154.00 in the American session on Tuesday after rebounding from the six-month low it touched below 153.00 earlier in the day. Nevertheless, the upside attempts resemble technical corrections for now as Japan's upbeat wage growth data and Q2 GDP revision cement bets on a BoJ rate hike next week and continue to support the Japanese Yen.

Gold holds around $4,400, but for how long?

Germany, Denmark, the Netherlands, Austria, Finland and Sweden issued a joint position on 27 August calling for the nearly €2 trillion proposal to be reduced by several hundred billion euros and rejecting additional common EU borrowing.
Diesel’s record $100 warning: The oil shock hiding in plain sight

The Oil market may look calmer than it did a few months ago, but diesel is sending a very different message.
