Bitcoin and Gold Outlook: BTC tops $80K, XAU reclaims $4,000 as Democrats take control of Congress

  • Bitcoin rises above $80,000, boosting market sentiment in the broader cryptocurrency market.
  • Gold gains momentum as bulls reposition above $4,000, signaling strengthening bullish sentiment.
  • Democrats are set to take control of the House and Senate in January as they edge Republicans in US midterm elections.

Bitcoin (BTC) and Gold (XAU/USD) are gaining momentum on Wednesday, as bulls stage a comeback. BTC’s position above $80,000 signals a bullish turnaround, erasing sharp losses from the Binance hack, which impacted $6.3 billion. Meanwhile, Gold’s recovery above $4,000 could strengthen bullish sentiment after the United States (US) midterm elections.

Democrats edge Republicans to control Congress

In the US, the Democratic Party is set to take control of the House and Senate in January, after outperforming the Republicans in the midterm elections on Tuesday. According to an NBC News report, Democrats flipped seven Senate seats, including Iowa, Kansas, Maine, North Carolina, Ohio, South Carolina and Texas.

The report adds that Democrats are set to win 258 seats in the House of Representatives, exceeding the 218 needed to achieve a majority. Broadly, Democrats continued their winning streak in gubernatorial positions, flipping Texas, Nevada, Ohio, Georgia and Iowa. Concerns about the economy amid elevated Oil and energy prices are among the factors that propelled the Democrats' expansive wins.

As for Crypto, the CLARITY Act, which earlier failed to pass the Senate, could face more hurdles if reintroduced.

“Much of the election outcome was already priced in. Even sizable Democratic majorities are unlikely to yield the votes needed to override a presidential veto, so while political noise may persist, the scope for legislation that materially changes the economic outlook looks limited,” Joel Kruger, Global Market Strategist at LMAX Group, said in an emailed commentary.

Nonetheless, the immediate impact has been higher prices, with Bitcoin rising above $80,000 and Ethereum (ETH) gaining ground beyond $2,400. Gold holds above $4,000, suggesting that investors are willing to reengage. The upcoming sessions will play a key role by either reinforcing a bullish grip or invalidating the prevailing recovery.
“With election uncertainty fading, we see room for investors to buy the dip in risk assets and trim dollar longs, while Treasury yields drift lower as markets pare expectations for additional Fed hikes beyond December,” Kruger added.

Technical analysis: Bitcoin rallies as bulls tighten grip

Bitcoin trades at $80,640, maintaining a constructive near-term bullish bias as it holds above the 200-day and 100-day Exponential Moving Averages (EMAs) at $76,533 and $77,849. Price is hovering just over the 50-day EMA at $80,153, suggesting underlying demand is building around the recent breakout area.

The Relative Strength Index (RSI) at 51 sits near neutral but slightly favors the upside, while the Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD) remains below zero with a relatively shallow negative reading, hinting that bearish momentum is fading rather than accelerating.

On the downside, immediate support lies at the 50-day EMA near $80,153, followed by the 100-day EMA at $77,849 and the deeper structural floor at the 200-day EMA around $76,533. On the topside, the SuperTrend line at $82,920 is the next resistance, where renewed selling pressure could emerge if bulls fail to secure a sustained break above it.

Gold technical analysis: XAU gains ground above $4,000

Gold rises and trades around $4,045 as odds of a bullish turnaround expand. Despite the short-term gains, the metal maintains a bearish near-term bias as price holds under a dense band of moving-average and trendline resistance. Spot Gold remains below the 50-day EMA at $4,160, the 100-day EMA at $4,240 and the 200-day EMA at $4,264, while the SuperTrend indicator at $4,163 reinforces the idea of topside supply.

Momentum is mixed, with the RSI hovering near a neutral 47 and the MACD improving but still negative, hinting at fading downside pressure rather than a clear bullish reversal.

Immediate resistance is clustered around the 50-day EMA at $4,160 and the SuperTrend line at $4,163, ahead of the 100-day EMA at $4,240. Above this, the 200-day EMA at $4,264 and the descending trendline break level near $4,299 form a broader cap that bulls would need to reclaim to shift the medium-term tone. Initial support lies at the secondary trendline break around $3,947, where previous resistance could now act as a structural floor if the metal extends its pullback.

Bitcoin, altcoins, stablecoins FAQs

Bitcoin is the largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization, a virtual currency designed to serve as money. This form of payment cannot be controlled by any one person, group, or entity, which eliminates the need for third-party participation during financial transactions.

Altcoins are any cryptocurrency apart from Bitcoin, but some also regard Ethereum as a non-altcoin because it is from these two cryptocurrencies that forking happens. If this is true, then Litecoin is the first altcoin, forked from the Bitcoin protocol and, therefore, an “improved” version of it.

Stablecoins are cryptocurrencies designed to have a stable price, with their value backed by a reserve of the asset it represents. To achieve this, the value of any one stablecoin is pegged to a commodity or financial instrument, such as the US Dollar (USD), with its supply regulated by an algorithm or demand. The main goal of stablecoins is to provide an on/off-ramp for investors willing to trade and invest in cryptocurrencies. Stablecoins also allow investors to store value since cryptocurrencies, in general, are subject to volatility.

Bitcoin dominance is the ratio of Bitcoin's market capitalization to the total market capitalization of all cryptocurrencies combined. It provides a clear picture of Bitcoin’s interest among investors. A high BTC dominance typically happens before and during a bull run, in which investors resort to investing in relatively stable and high market capitalization cryptocurrency like Bitcoin. A drop in BTC dominance usually means that investors are moving their capital and/or profits to altcoins in a quest for higher returns, which usually triggers an explosion of altcoin rallies.
