Warsh comments continue to drive Sept Fed rate hike expectations higher

Asia market update: Risk appetite modestly hurt by weekend US/Iran skirmish, recent Warsh comments continue to drive Sept Fed rate hike expectations higher; Oil rises by >2%; Month-end flows in focus for bonds and FX; China Aug PMIs remained in contraction.

General trend and developments

- Fed rate hike probabilities continued to lift in Asia on Warsh’s comments from Fri. The probability of a rate increase is now >60%. Warsh prioritized the inflation outlook. Specifically, the inflation data does not suggest the trend has ‘meaningfully’ improved, according to the Fed Chair. Hence, traders of Fed Funds Futures (FFRs) now see a nearly 56% chance of a quarter-point hike in September, per the CME’s FedWatch tool. And on Polymarket, speculators indicated 49% odds that the Fed raises rates.

- Oil traders have, thus far, not panicked over the weekend skirmishes between the US and Iranian forces in the Middle East [Iran’s Larak Island, UAE and Jordan]. No damage nor fatalities have been reported. Equity markets generally trimmed losses as the session progressed.

- US Treasury Sec Bessent has continued to ‘make the rounds’ in the press. He has thus far commented on the G20, Iran, China and Japan.

- That being said, the US Treasury has blocked certain journalists from the G20 Finance Ministers' meeting in North Carolina [AP].

- NZIER Shadow Board indicates the possibility for a close RBNZ decision this week. The RBNZ is expected to confront weak growth and stubborn inflation when it sets rates on Wed. Aug ANZ Business Confidence showed m/m weakness, while the inflation expectation components were not helpful [Inflation expectations lifted from 3.14% to 3.26%]. The split NZIER vote for a RBNZ rate hike highlights why Wed’s rate decision could be challenging for the central bank’s board. Meanwhile, NZ politics have, also, been in focus with elections expected in Oct. The government is also said to have canceled the fuel tax hike planned for next year. Further, New Zealand First leader Peters has called for a return of the RBNZ’s dual mandate [Jul 29th].

- Like NZ, Australian inflation has remained sticky, while growth has eased. The Aug Melbourne data has kept inflation concerns alive, particularly the y/y figure. The increase was mostly attributed to transport price rises. Q2 inventories and corporate profits were the most recent releases to suggest that growth slowed in the quarter. Overall, we remain on alert for any possible negative impact of inflation on Q2 consumption and GDP [Q2 GDP data is due on Sept 2nd].

- Over the weekend, following months of deliberation between the United States and Venezuela—marked by U.S. earthquake-relief assistance that included the deployment of roughly 900 American military personnel inside the country following an earthquake that claimed approximately 5,000 lives—and a recent evaluation of leaving OPEC, Venezuela’s interim President Delcy Rodríguez announced a 25-year energy agreement with the United States aimed at raising production to as much as 1.5 million barrels per day.
Looking ahead, this week’s key economic releases and policy events feature several high-impact data points and central-bank decisions, based on the Asian-weighted focus regional time-zone calendar. Key releases include India’s Q1 GDP, global S&P Global/HSBC Manufacturing, Services and Composite PMIs, China’s August RatingDog Manufacturing and Services PMIs, Eurozone’s preliminary August CPI and unemployment, US August S&P Global/ISM Manufacturing, Services and Composite PMIs, South Korea’s August CPI, Australia’s Q2 GDP and the accompanying September RBA interest-rate statement, then New Zealand’s interest rate decision on Tuesday [Wednesday local time]. GBP/USD bounces off over one-week low; upside potential seems limited

The GBP/USD pair edges higher at the start of a new week, reversing a part of Friday's heavy losses to over a one-week trough. Spot prices, however, lack bullish conviction and trade below mid-1.3500s during the Asian session, warranting caution before confirming that the recent pullback from the highest level since February has run its course.

EUR/USD edges higher to near 1.1600 ahead of German CPI inflation release

The EUR/USD pair gathers strength to around 1.1590 during the early Asian trading hours. The US Dollar edges lower against the Euro despite hawkish remarks from Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh. Traders will take more cues from the preliminary reading of Consumer Price Index inflation data from Germany, which is due later on Monday.

Gold pares intraday losses to sub-$4,400 levels; not out of the woods yet

Gold recovers slightly from sub-$4,400 levels touched during the Asian session, though the upside potential seems limited. A softer US Dollar offers some support to the precious metal and helps trim a part of its intraday losses. Meanwhile, Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh's comments on curbing inflationary pressures on Friday lifted bets for an interest rate hike, which might keep a lid on any meaningful recovery for the non-yielding bullion.

Solana: Strong institutional confidence keeps SOL afloat above $100

Solana price is trading around $100 testing the psychological support level after a 3% decline the previous day. SOL-focused Exchange Traded Funds recorded over $150 million in inflows last week, reflecting strong institutional demand. Solana risks capitulation as price tests the $100 threshold amid easing bullish momentum.

Diesel’s record $100 warning: The oil shock hiding in plain sight

The Oil market may look calmer than it did a few months ago, but diesel is sending a very different message.
