Hot PPI and Oil prices continue to drive CB rate hike expectations and yields up

Asia Market Update: Hot PPI and oil prices continue to drive CB rate hike expectations and yields up; BOJ and Fed rate increases are possible for next week after ECB move; US CPI due on Fri.

General trend and developments

-Global bond yields continue to surge: Oil prices and USTs have been among the primary drivers. On Thurs, the US Treasury debt buyback targeted coupons maturing 2037-2046 [Received $10.5B of offers for buyback, accepted $5.2B (v maximum of $6B for the operation)]. 30-year USTs were also auctioned by the US Treasury at higher yields and bid-to-cover. Japan’s MOF is not considering government debt buybacks, according to recent comments from MOF official Sato.

-With that being said, traders are further eyeing the potential for BOJ and Fed rate hikes during next week ahead of today’s US CPI release. Before, the US consumer price data release, hotter Aug PPI figures have already been seen out of the US and Japan. On Thursday, BOJ’s Masu had already expressed concern about the recent spike in Japanese producer prices. Hence, the BOJ may signal readiness to speed up rate hikes, according to a recently released press report. Meanwhile, Aussie yields have been particularly active. Australian short yields have surged by 20bps ahead of more possible hawkish RBA comments next week, as Governor Bullock and other board members are scheduled to testify on Friday (Sept 18th). Australia, also, sold 3-year bonds at a much higher yield [Australia sold A$800M v A$800M indicated in 2.75% Nov 2029 Bonds: Avg Yield: 5.0396% v 4.4692% prior]

-Trump refutes WSJ report on Iran war timeline: The Iran war could ‘end before election’, according to the US President. Recall, top Trump Advisers [including VP Vance and Sec of State Rubio] had reportedly told him that the Iran war could last past Inauguration Day in January 2029, said the WSJ.

-Thus far, Friday has been quiet on the US/Iran military front. Even still, traders are expected to remain alert going into the weekend. Events related to Saudi Arabia are expected to continue to garner attention, especially with oil prices remaining north of $100/bbl. During the NY session, the Houthis captured control of a key port city, potentially giving them more leverage over the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, sending Brent above $105/barrel and WTI above $100/barrel. More recently, Trump declined a request from the Saudi Crown Prince MBS to strike the Yemeni Houthis [Axios].

-On Monday, Iran and Gulf States are due to meet on the Omani initiative regarding a Strait of Hormuz deal. Iran’s Top Security Official recently outlined plans of a restricted zone to be announced outside the Strait of Hormuz in the coming days, extending from the line of the US Navy’s blockade into the Gulf. Vessels entering the zone will face sanctions, with Iran and Oman expected to sign maps defining authorized shipping routes in the coming days. The routes were recently extended from Chabahar into parts of the Gulf of Oman and Arabian Sea.

-South Korea early Sept chip export growth accelerated to >270% y/y, as shipments to the US and China remained strong.

-The Shanghai Composite trades sharply lower by 2% as chipmaker Enflame rallies by >185% in debut. Therefore, we ponder whether mainland investors are electing to purchase the ‘Nvidia-competitor’s’ shares and sell other stocks. A similar pattern was seen when large chipmaker CXMT debuted in Shanghai back in late Jul. AUD/USD keeps range near mid-0.7100s as USD bulls await US CPI

AUD/USD steadies near mid-0.7100s in the Asian session on Friday, stalling the previous day's sharp decline to an over one-week low. The August PPI report reaffirmed Fed rate-hike bets and boosted the US Dollar on Thursday, which weighed heavily on the pair. However, hawkish RBA expectations limited losses for the Aussie as USD bulls now await the release of the US consumer inflation figures before placing fresh bets.

USD/JPY holds lower ground toward 154.00; looks to US CPI

USD/JPY holds lower ground toward 154.00 in the Asian session on Friday after hot Japanese PPI data bolster a more hawkish BoJ repricing and provide fresh impetus to the Japanese Yen. However, the downside appears capped as the US Dollar preserves overnight gains ahead of the latest US consumer inflation data.

Gold: Will US CPI inflation revive the uptrend?
Gold is hanging close to one-week lows near $4,310 early Friday, nursing heavy losses after the US Producer Price Index (PPI) data release and the recent upsurge in Oil prices. Gold is looking to recover a part of the previous heavy losses as traders resort to repositioning ahead of the all-important US Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation report.
Cardano approaches critical support as correction risks grow
Cardano (ADA) recovers slightly, trading at $0.206 at the time of writing on Friday, inches above the critical support zone after losing more than 6% so far this week. Weakening derivatives data and fading bullish momentum suggest a bearish near-term outlook, with a decisive close below the support zone potentially triggering a deeper correction for ADA.
Oil and rates surging ahead of US CPI today
In commodities, brent jumped to USD 108/bbl last night and held that level overnight. This is adding renewed inflation pressure and feeding through into global rates markets. Markets are starting to realise that the Strait of Hormuz disruptions are not going away anytime soon, especially from recent comments that signal no clear resolution in sight.
Venezuela’s 65-billion-barrel Oil deal could reshape America’s inflation fight
The United States (US) has secured unprecedented access to part of Venezuela’s vast Oil reserves. The timing is particularly significant as the war with Iran is disrupting Middle Eastern supplies, keeping energy prices elevated and reviving concerns about inflation.
