Here are four ways to save money while renting

Follow these 4 tips for saving money as a renter

Does it feel like money isn't going as far as it used to? If you've been feeling the strain, you're not the only one, and it's not all in your head. The cost of living is going up, and you might notice increased costs of groceries and even rent.

While many Americans rent, prices have risen in many parts of the United States. These increased costs impact many families and individuals, especially those trying to save money. Maybe you want to save money to buy your own home eventually, or perhaps you just want extra savings for emergencies.

Increased rental costs, not to mention the price of other goods and services, may make it harder to save. Still, there are many ways you can save more while renting.

Tip 1: Start with a basic budget

If you've yet to make a budget, now would be a great time to do so. It's easier to save money if you know how much you have coming in and how much is going out. While budgeting may be a challenge, especially if it's not something you are naturally drawn to, you can find a method that works for you.

Try to at least keep track of your monthly income. From there, track your monthly expenses like rent, car payment, gas, and utilities. From there, you can start budgeting the remainder you have each month to cut down on spending where you can.

You can try using a spreadsheet or a budgeting app, as there are many options out there to help track your money.

Tip 2: Make some easy changes to save

Another way to save money as a renter is to find small ways that you can save. While completely changing your lifestyle is overwhelming, you can make minor cuts to your monthly spending.

Some ideas to start with include:

Walking to nearby shops and restaurants instead of driving.

Changing your plans for dinner so you eat at home one more night a week than usual.

Buying generic brands instead of name brands.

While these changes might not seem like a big deal, the savings add up if you are consistent.

Tip 3: Think about energy efficiency

Want to save money while also lowering your impact on the environment? The great news is these two things are often very compatible. Often, things that drain energy also drain your wallet.

To save money and live more eco-consciously, you can remember to turn off lights when you're not in the room. You could also consider getting more energy-efficient bulbs that cost less to operate.

Tip 4: Consider downsizing

Trying to save money on rent? While more desirable areas and cities may have higher costs, you can still consider downsizing to save on your rent. You could find a smaller place or move to a less up-and-coming neighborhood.

Also, you'll likely have better odds of finding something within your budget if you give yourself extra time to look. This way, you can look for deals instead of going with the first available apartment.

It's a difficult time for many people to make ends meet, whether you're renting or paying a mortgage. Still, if you need to save money while renting, the tips on this list will help you.
