Gold awaits Fed decision as rate hike concerns limit demand

Gold (XAU/USD) remains under pressure as markets await the Fed decision and key US economic reports. Gulf tensions add to concerns about energy costs and inflation. These pressures could increase expectations of further rate rises and limit support for gold. The price now holds above the lower boundary of a descending wedge. Holding this area could help gold stabilize, while a move above the upper boundary would suggest that the correction is easing.

Gold remains under pressure ahead of Fed decision and PCE data

Gold faces continued downward pressure as markets await guidance on the next stage of US monetary policy. Royal Bank of Canada expects the Fed to leave rates unchanged on Wednesday after raising them in September. However, the bank forecasts two further increases of 25 basis points each before the end of March 2027. This outlook limits support from expectations of a pause. Gold pays no interest, so higher rates can make interest-bearing assets more attractive. The policy statement and press conference may matter more than an unchanged rate decision.

Gulf tensions add a source of pressure through higher energy costs and inflation concerns. Such risks can support demand for gold, but they can also increase expectations of tighter monetary policy. TD Securities links the recent decline to reduced exposure among money managers amid technology weakness and rising petroleum prices. The firm warns that further conflict could keep precious metals under pressure. Meanwhile, the US Dollar Index holds slightly above 102. A stronger dollar makes gold more expensive in other currencies, which can limit demand and make a recovery harder.

Thursday brings the advance estimate of third-quarter US gross domestic product and September Personal Consumption Expenditures inflation data. These reports will help assess whether growth and price pressures support further rate increases. Strong growth alongside persistent inflation could keep gold under pressure after the Fed meeting. Slower growth and softer inflation could ease those concerns. However, weaker growth alone may offer limited relief if inflation remains high. A less restrictive rate outlook would improve conditions for gold.

Gold price analysis: Key support near $3,980 remains in focus

The gold chart below shows a descending wedge on the four-hour timeframe. The price has fallen from just below $4,700 in August to around $4,000. Both boundaries slope downward, while the gap between them narrows. Repeated advances have stopped beneath the upper trendline, showing that upward momentum remains weak. Gold now sits close to the lower boundary after briefly moving below $4,000. The latest consolidation suggests that the recent decline has slowed, but the price has yet to challenge the upper boundary.

Gold Chart

The $4,000 area provides the main support reference. The wedge floor runs slightly below it, near $3,980. If the price holds this area and moves above $4,050, it could approach the descending resistance line. If it falls below the lower boundary and stays there, the pattern would weaken.

Resistance lies near $4,100–$4,110 along the upper wedge boundary. This reference slopes lower over time. If the price moves above it and holds, the correction would show clearer signs of easing. That could allow a move toward the recent October peaks around $4,170–$4,200. If gold fails near the upper boundary, the descending structure would remain in place.

Gold price outlook: Fed decision and us inflation data in focus

Gold could stabilize if it holds support near $4,000 and concerns about higher interest rates ease. A softer Fed message and lower inflation readings would help, while rising energy costs could keep pressure on the price. A sustained move above $4,100–$4,110 would suggest that the correction is easing and bring $4,170–$4,200 into focus. However, a fall below the wedge floor near $3,980 would weaken support and leave room for further declines.
