Silver FAQs

Silver is a precious metal highly traded among investors. It has been historically used as a store of value and a medium of exchange. Although less popular than Gold, traders may turn to Silver to diversify their investment portfolio, for its intrinsic value or as a potential hedge during high-inflation periods. Investors can buy physical Silver, in coins or in bars, or trade it through vehicles such as Exchange Traded Funds, which track its price on international markets.

Silver prices can move due to a wide range of factors. Geopolitical instability or fears of a deep recession can make Silver price escalate due to its safe-haven status, although to a lesser extent than Gold's. As a yieldless asset, Silver tends to rise with lower interest rates. Its moves also depend on how the US Dollar (USD) behaves as the asset is priced in dollars (XAG/USD). A strong Dollar tends to keep the price of Silver at bay, whereas a weaker Dollar is likely to propel prices up. Other factors such as investment demand, mining supply – Silver is much more abundant than Gold – and recycling rates can also affect prices.

Silver is widely used in industry, particularly in sectors such as electronics or solar energy, as it has one of the highest electric conductivity of all metals – more than Copper and Gold. A surge in demand can increase prices, while a decline tends to lower them. Dynamics in the US, Chinese and Indian economies can also contribute to price swings: for the US and particularly China, their big industrial sectors use Silver in various processes; in India, consumers’ demand for the precious metal for jewellery also plays a key role in setting prices.

Silver prices tend to follow Gold's moves. When Gold prices rise, Silver typically follows suit, as their status as safe-haven assets is similar. The Gold/Silver ratio, which shows the number of ounces of Silver needed to equal the value of one ounce of Gold, may help to determine the relative valuation between both metals. Some investors may consider a high ratio as an indicator that Silver is undervalued, or Gold is overvalued. On the contrary, a low ratio might suggest that Gold is undervalued relative to Silver.

AUD/USD holds above 0.6900 ahead of Fed's Warsh

AUD/USD struggles to capitalize on the previous day's modest bounce from its lowest level since early July and trades above 0.6900 in the Asian session on Friday. Thursday's disappointing Australian jobs data tempered RBA rate-hike bets, capping the Aussie. The US Dollar (USD), meanwhile, is regaining positive traction as this week's hot US CPI and PPI reports keep Fed rate hike bets firmly on the table. This further limits the pair ahead of Fed Chair Kevin Warsh speech.

USD/JPY retakes 158.00, with eyes on Warsh's speech

USD/JPY retakes 158.00 in the Asian session on Friday, holding on the overnight bounce from the vicinity of 157.50, or a one-week low, amid the emergence of some US Dollar buying. This week's hot US CPI and PPI reports lifted Fed rate-hike bets, which, along with stable US bond yields and geopolitical uncertainties, help revive USD demand. Traders, however, remain on high alert amid speculation that authorities will step in to prop up the Japanese Yen, which could cap the currency pair ahead of Fed Chair Kevin Warsh's speech.

Gold eases to $4,150 as traders await Warsh's speech

Gold drifts lower to near $4,150 in the Asian session on Friday, reversing part of the previous day's move up amid reviving US Dollar demand. US inflation data released this week reaffirmed bets for at least one Fed rate hike this year, while US bond yields stabilize after Thursday's steep decline. This, along with geopolitical risks, underpins the safe-haven USD, which, in turn, is seen weighing on bullion ahead of Fed Chair Kevin Warsh's speech.

Bitcoin holds $80,500; Ethereum rebounds, Ripple weakens

Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH) and Ripple (XRP) show mixed price action on Friday, with BTC and ETH holding above key support levels while XRP struggles below key resistance. Meanwhile, sticky inflation figures have dampened risk appetite, and momentum indicators for these top three cryptocurrencies have also weakened, signaling a risk of a deeper correction if key support fails to hold.

US midterms put fiscal policy under the spotlight, treasury sell-off raises risk
The US will hold its midterm elections - a de facto referendum on the Trump administration - on 3rd November after two years shaped by rising trade protectionism, attacks on Federal Reserve independence and, since the spring, the Iran war. Republicans are expected to take a heavy electoral hit.
Everyone's dumping Gold after hot US inflation. Here's why $4,100 could be a floor, not a cliff
Gold (XAU/USD) is recovering from a sharp sell-off triggered by hotter-than-expected United States (US) inflation data released on Wednesday. The precious metal briefly plunged toward $4,073 as investors increased their bets on further Federal Reserve (Fed) interest rate hikes before recovering as US Treasury yields and the US Dollar (USD) reversed their initial gains.
