Monero (XMR) caught up in cryptojacking malware which targets Linux servers

  • To mine XMR, GoLang utilizes a Monero mining script referred to as XMRig 2.13.1.
  • Go Lang is written using the Go programming language and targets Linux servers.

Monero is once again targeted in a new cryptocurrency mining malware that is executing on vulnerable computers. The malware referred to as GoLang was discovered by several researchers who say that it is written using the Go programming language, especially on vulnerable Linux-based servers.

According to one of the researchers Trend Micro, GoLang not only targets vulnerable servers but has the ability to propagate the rest of the network. At the same time, a researcher by name F5 details that the malware uses up to seven methods to spread. As reported by Finance Magnates “four methods involves targeting the server-level programming languages, while others involve the misconfigured credentials in the SSH or Redis database.”

To mine XMR, GoLang utilizes a Monero mining script referred to as XMRig 2.13.1. The cybercriminals behind the malware have already injected it in a number of mining pools and made not more than $2,000.

Cryptojacking continues to grow among cybercriminals who install the malicious software on computers of unsuspecting users in turn easily mining cryptos without having to pay for the cost of machines and electricity.
