NZD/USD: RBNZ surprise pause keeps sellers in control, falling US yields limit downside

  • NZD/USD retreats sharply after the RBNZ unexpectedly holds rates at 2.75% in a 4–3 vote.
  • The Fed’s divided hold fails to extend selling as Warsh’s remarks weigh on Treasury yields.
  • Resistance at 0.5640 and support around 0.5580 frame the next directional test.

NZDUSD recovered from lows around 0.5565 to 0.5709 as expectations of an RBNZ rate hike and falling U.S. Treasury yields supported buyers. However, repeated attempts to clear resistance around 0.5710 failed before the central bank’s surprise decision triggered a sharp reversal.

On Wednesday, NZDUSD fell from around 0.5709 towards 0.5580 after the RBNZ voted 4-3 to leave interest rates unchanged at 2.75%, disappointing expectations of a 25-basis-point increase.

The selling extended across NZD crosses. AUDNZD gained more than 250 pips, while EUR/NZD and GBPNZD each advanced more than 300 pips during the session.

NZDUSD subsequently recovered towards 0.5640, where sellers returned. Price has since retreated towards 0.5617, although Wednesday evening’s Fed decision offered limited additional downside momentum.

A divided Fed hold offers limited Dollar support

The Fed left its policy rate unchanged in a 10–2 vote, with two members preferring a 25-bps.

Despite those hawkish dissents, markets interpreted Chair Kevin Warsh’s press conference as dovish, reducing expectations for subsequent tightening. Falling Treasury yields have consequently limited the dollar’s ability to extend its gains against the New Zealand dollar.

The distinction matters: the Fed retained its concerns about inflation, but the market’s response reflected a softer interpretation of the future policy path.

The fundamental outlook remains mixed

The RBNZ’s unexpected pause weakened the immediate case for NZD buyers, but the bank left further tightening possible. That makes it difficult to treat the decision as confirmation of sustained monetary-policy support for sellers.

The U.S. side is similarly complicated. Two Fed members supported an immediate hike, yet declining yields suggest traders have not interpreted the meeting as a reason to price a substantially more aggressive tightening cycle.

Further movement in NZD/USD will depend partly on whether the RBNZ disappointment continues to outweigh the loss of dollar support from lower yields. Upcoming U.S. inflation data could help resolve that tension by changing expectations for the Fed’s next move.

NZD/USD technical outlook: 0.5640 and 0.5580 frame the next move

Resistance around 0.5640 is the first level buyers need to reclaim. A sustained break above it would strengthen the recovery case and bring 0.5700–0.5710 back into focus.

For sellers, Wednesday’s low around 0.5580 remains the key test. A sustained break below that level would strengthen the bearish structure and expose the earlier low around 0.5565.
