S&P 500 Index opens modestly higher, financial stocks post strong gains

  • Wall Street's main indexes opened higher on Friday.
  • Financial stocks rise on the back of recovering US T-bond yields.
  • Defensive sectors trade in the negative territory after the opening bell.

After posting modest gains on Thursday, major equity indexes in the US opened in the positive territory on Friday. As of writing, the S&P 500 is up 0.1% on the day at 4,243, the Dow Jones Industrial Average is rising 0.3% at 34,560 and the Nasdaq Composite is little changed at 13,995.

Among the 11 major S&P 500 sectors, the Financials Index is up 0.6% supported by a 1.5% increase seen in the benchmark 10-year US Treasury bond yield. On the other hand, the defensive sectors, Real Estate and Healthcare, lose around 0.5% after the opening bell.
