The Bitcoin community is currently playing the lightning relay game to show and test the strength of the lightning network. The lightning network is an off-chain scalability technique which allows users to send money around the world nearly instantaneously, without any third party.

The lightning torch relay or the “LN Trust Chain” was started by an individual going by the pseudonym “Hodlonaut”. At least 139 people in 37 countries have taken part in the experiment so far. The “torch” is passed from one person to another via Twitter and each individual adds 10,000 satoshis to it. Notable community members like Andreas Antonopoulos, Anthony Pompliano, and Joost Jager have taken part in the relay.

Commenting on why he started the torch relay, Hodlonaut said:

“The reason I started this was just to have some fun with the lightning network and maybe spread more awareness. I thought it would maybe do five or six hops and then die, without many people noticing.”
