The French have stepped back from the European abyss. They chose not the dissolve their bonds with the rest of Europe. They did, however, turn their back on their own post-war political settlement. Macron's shrewd founding of a novel political party, neither right nor left, combined with the history of his opponent, was enough to carry him to an easy victory. But his triumph is unlikely to solve the discontents of the Fifth Republic. He is a preeminently a man of the system. Without a more promising economic future, how long will the armistice last?
