Compared to its economic rivals, Japan, the United States and the European Union, official statistical reporting on the Chinese economy is sparse and without historical context. Compared to its competitors accurate economic information is even scarcer. With one or two exceptions there are no alternatives to the official economic story coming from Beijing. We will look at the reliability of the official Chinese statistics, some of the private alternatives and discuss some of the secondary measures used to critique the government information.
