Gavin Grier-Rees

Gavin has 25 years experience of the currency markets. Starting in London in the mid 80’s, he was an interbank market maker in major currencies (USD, GBP, JPY, AUD and EUR (after DMK, FFR and NLG) at a number of leading international banks. Later he moved into proprietary trading and strategic risk management with an increasing emphasis on position taking using currency options. Providing detailed analysis and trading advice for well known corporate clients was a key part of his role. Throughout his career he has been a succesful technical analyst. He produced one of the earliest trading systems based on pattern recognition, drawing on the emerging fields of fractal geometry and neural networks. The strategies have been refined over time to produce consistent profits. FX Market Report was formed in late 2009 to produce an alternative analysis of the FX markets for the expanding number of retail traders. The FXMR team draws on a combination of fundamental and technical analysis as well as the key ingredient of ‘market sentiment’ or ‘psychology’. As Gavin puts it, ‘fundamentals tell you where it’s going, charts tell you how it will get there!’ The company now produces daily technical reports, a weekly strategic report and has a ‘Strategic Tradebook’ for subscribers to ‘FXMR-insider’. In the near future they plan to offer tuition and mentoring sessions for traders based on the trading system and tactics developed ‘in-house’ at FXMR. The author heads up a small but expanding team based in Auckland, New Zealand and the UK. When not at his desk, Gavin enjoys good food, great wine and working it off by cycling, hiking, sailing and skiing.
