US economic indicators - Trade deficit (Jun): Widening due to petroleum imports by BHF−Bank
The trade deficit fell from $28.8bn to $26.0bn in May – a ten year low and less than 40% of the peak level of August 2006. The deficit is likely to have widened to about $29bn in June: in the preliminary GDP figures, the Commerce Department assumed an increase in imports and a setback in exports, which had unexpectedly risen sharply in May. However, given the 3.2% mom jump in import prices, the rise in imports will be mainly price−driven. According to the Commerce Department's preliminary estimate, net exports contributed 1.4 percentage points to growth in Q2, as real imports fell about three times as much as real exports. Nevertheless the real trade deficit could also have risen in June, albeit only slightly.
