Forex − Pound slumps after survey shows UK retail sales plummeting by AFX News

The pound dropped sharply in value against other currencies after a survey by the Confederation of British Industry showed UK high street sales are falling off the charts. At 11.25 a.m., the pound had fallen to $1.9887, from $1.9945 at 11.00 a.m. before the release of the data.

The recent correction in the oil price will probably have already prevented a further strong rise in energy prices in the July survey. After the very strong rise in consumer prices in the same month of the previous year, we expect the inflation rate to moderate appreciably. The core rate (ex energy and food) should also dip clearly below the 2% mark.
