With the recovery from Friday's $1.9843 low failing to move above last week's $2.0076 high, GBP/USD has taken out critical support at the $1.9823 breakout high from April 3. Penetration there cleared the way for a run at $1.9771, the 0.382 retracement of the $1.9184-2.0134 rise. Secondary support is around $1.9724, a reaction low from April 11.

Traders will shift their focus to US retail sales reports, which are forecasted to drop to 0.4% for both the headline figure, as well as the excluding-autos number. The producer price index for April is forecasted to slip to 0.6%, easing from 1.0% a month earlier.

Friday Notes - The oil price just keeps on rising by HVB Group
In addition to the big increase in energy prices, industrial commodity prices also moved higher in April. While most of the effect will be on crude and intermediate materials, some will show up in both headline and core PPI.

Canadian employment disappoints expectations (FXstreet.com)
The Canadian Net Change in Employment shows a loss of 5.200 jobs in April, against the expectations of a 18.000 gain, according to the latest data from StatsCan. The unemployment rate, nevertheless, remains at a 6.1% historical low. Since the start of the year, the service sector has added an estimated 182,000 workers (+1.4%), an increase offset by the employment loss in the Manufacturing sector, where employment has fallen 0.7% so far in the year.
