US economic indicators - Trade balance (August): narrower deficit due to oil price correction by BHF−Bank

The total trade deficit rose from –$58.8bn to –$62.2bn in July, but this was an oil−related surge, because the deficit ex petroleum fell to the lowest level since the beginning of 2001. Given the drop in import prices by 3.7% mom, we forecast that the trade deficit will have fallen sharply to about –$58.5bn in August.

The timing for a recovery in Japan's growth may be delayed, some Bank of Japan board members said at the central bank's Sept. 16−17 policy meeting, minutes released on Friday showed. One member said at the scheduled meeting there was a need to watch how the failure of U.S. investment banks and the global market turmoil could affect the lending attitude of Japanese banks.
