Daily Market Commentary − The dollar rallied across the board on Wednesday by GFT (Global Forex Trading)

The dollar rallied across the board on Wednesday on ongoing unwinding of shorts, this time along the US equity indices, while the oil dragged the CRB Index down and the carry trades fell further. The dollar should experience more strength today. The US trade deficit is due and the number will likely improve.

US economic indicators - Trade balance (July): wider deficit despite ongoing strength in exports by BHF−Bank

We expect nominal imports to have gone up by a similar rate in July, as import prices rose by 1.7% mom. Exports are unlikely be as buoyant as in June, but the marked rise in capital goods orders and the still high level of the ISM export component indicate that they could have risen by about 2% mom. We expect the nominal trade deficit to have widened from $56.8bn to $57.5bn in July. The real trade deficit will not have risen as markedly, and net exports could thus prevent the GDP growth rate from turning negative in the 3rd quarter.

Reserve Bank of NZ cuts cash rate to 7.50 pct (Thomson Financial News)

New Zealand's central bank cut interest rates by half a point to 7.5 percent on Thursday, the second consecutive reduction, saying the slowing economy would rein in strong inflation pressures, leaving room for further cuts. All 17 economists in a Reuters poll had forecast a cut, with one predicting a half−percentage point cut.
