Daily Forex Outlook − Soft US data, and plunging stock prices cause market volatility. Bernanke comments on a slowing 2008 by Easy Forex
EUR/JPY's recent decline from 166.64 extended further to as low as 155.69 before recovering mildly. Nevertheless, from a short term angle, further fall is still expected as long as 158.45 resistance holds. Next downside target will be 61.8% retracement of 149.27 to 167.72 at 156.32 after taking out 100% projection of 166.64 to 159.73 from 162.27 at 155.36.

Friday Notes - Fed – still a long way to go by HVB Group
After having recovered in November, we expect retail sales to have edged down 0.4% m−o−m in December, in line with indications coming from the British Retail Consortium's retail trade survey published early this week. In Q4, retail sales posted a significant deceleration compared to the previous quarter, indicating that past Bank of England tightening and the financial market crisis are taking their toll on consumers.

Japanese consumer confidence slips to lowest in over four years in December (Thomson Financial News)
Japanese consumer confidence sank to its lowest level in more than four years in December as consumers fretted about deteriorating economic conditions, the labor market and inflation, government data released Friday show. The consumer confidence index fell to 38.0 in December, its lowest level since June 2003, from 39.8 in November, according to the Cabinet Office data.

Japan tertiary index up 0.1 percent in November on firm medical spending (Thomson Financial News)
Japan's tertiary index, which measures spending in the services sector, rose 0.1 percent in November from October owing to firm spending on medical and welfare services, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry said Friday. The index increased to 110.6 in November, rising for the second straight month, but was still below the record level of 111.2 reached in August.
