Forex Technical Analysis − EUR/USD: (1.4702) Rebound off 1.4310 tested key area of 1.4750/.4770 by KBC Bank

The yen depreciated vis−à−vis the U.S. dollar today as the greenback tested offers around the ¥109.70 level and was supported around the ¥108.45 level. Technically, today's intraday high was just above the 23.6% retracement of the move from ¥114.65 to ¥107.85. Data released in Japan overnight saw the December monetary base up 0.4% y/y.

Housing prices have posted a rather higher than expected increment in December, with a 1.3% jump from November and a 5.2% rise from December 2006, according to the latest Halifax report on housing prices.

Australian Nov Bldg Approvals Rise 8.9% Vs Oct (Dow Jones)

The total number of Australian houses and apartments approved for construction rose a seasonally adjusted 8.9% in November from October, the Australian Bureau of Statistics said Tuesday. Economists had expected on average that total residential building approvals rose 0.5% from the month before. Private−sector house approvals rose a seasonally adjusted 0.3% from a month earlier.

UK Dec like−for−like retail sales up 0.3 pct, lowest Dec rate for 3 years − BRC (Thomson Financial News)

UK retailers posted the weakest rate of sales growth during the crucial December shopping period for three years, a leading retailing lobby group said today. The British Retail Consortium revealed that like−for−like sales growth, which excludes new stores and space, was up 0.3 pct in December from the month before.
