Friday Notes - US economy on federal life support by HVB Group

Since the May Inflation Report, the inflation outlook in the UK has markedly deteriorated, with the headline CPI jumping to 3.8% y−o−y in June (from 3% in April) and the oil price hitting an interim record high (at around USD 146 p/b). Energy as well as food prices were the main driver of the sharp inflation acceleration, while core inflation has edged up only slightly. We think the headline inflation is still heading north and we expect the July figure to pick up to 4% when published next week – mainly on higher fuel and food costs. The peak is likely to be reached even in September this year in the wake of higher energy inflation – even assuming that the oil price stabilizes at the current level, we expect another round of utility tariff increases to be effective already in August.
