U.S. Forex Market Commentary by GCI

Data released in the eurozone today saw German May industrial production up 1.9% m/m while the German May trade surplus expanded to €17.5 billion from €15.0 billion in April. All eyes are on today's eurozone finance ministers meeting and the fireworks that are expected to ensue. French finance minister Sarkozy is expected to tell his EMU-13 counterparts why France should delay its deficit reduction goal.

Friday Notes - EMU Budgets: Missed Opportunities by HVB Group

Following a substantial drop in April (mostly driven by a calendar effect and a weatherrelated slump in energy output), we expect industrial production to have rebounded in May, totally offsetting the previous reading. This would leave the Apr-May figure only slightly above Q1, underpinning a softening in industrial output. Nevertheless, it is still robust.

German industrial output rose a seasonally adjusted 1.9 pct in May from April, beating a consensus forecast, according to preliminary data from the Economy and Technology Ministry. Economists polled by Thomson Financial had expected an increase of 1.8 pct.

Global FX Daily - U.S. Edition - GBP improves despite weaker than expected PPI by Mellon Foreign Exchange

GBP has been in the ascendancy this morning, despite a weaker than expected outcome on core PPI output. The y/y rate on core output prices eased back to +2.1%, the lowest seen since Sep 2006, although this only had a very short-lived negative impact on GBP.
