Weekly Commentary - Data extravaganza by Westpac Institutional Bank
May is normally a trade-surplus month, although for the past two years May trade has been in deficit. We expect a return to surplus, with strong export receipts on the back of high commodity prices. Over the next few months we will be watching closely for signs of a pick-up in imports to meet booming consumption. There is some risk that imports could rise earlier than expected in May, which would see a smaller surplus than expected, or even a deficit.

Consumer confidence falls in June (Thomson Financial News)
Consumer confidence fell more than expected in June as shoppers fretted about jobs, a private research group said Tuesday. The New York-based Conference Board said that its Consumer Confidence Index fell almost 5 points to 103.9, down from a revised 108.5 in May.

DATA SNAP: US May Home Sales Pace Below Expectations (Dow Jones)
New-home sales resumed falling in May and the big jump in demand the month before was revised lower, while the median price of a home compared to a year earlier dropped. Sales of single-family homes decreased by 1.6% to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 915,000, the Commerce Department said Tuesday.
