The pace of growth outside the manufacturing sector picked up in April, amid concerns about energy prices, a report Thursday said. The Institute for Supply Management said its U.S. non-manufacturing index, which is comprised mostly of service-related companies, moved to a reading of 56.0 in April, from 52.4 in March and 54.3 in February.

US Q1 productivity up 1.7 pct, unit labor costs up 0.6 pct (AFX News)

The efficiency of US workers rose at a faster-than-expected pace in the first quarter, while the the cost of hiring workers rose at a sharply slower-than-expected pace, the Labor Department said today. US workers increased their productivity by 1.7 pct in the first quarter, almost triple the 0.6 pct increase economists had expected.
