Weekly Commentary - Bigger nut, bigger hammer by Westpac Institutional Bank

Our Q1 headline CPI forecast is 0.7%qtr & 3.1%yr (vs 3.3% prev). Higher petrol adds 0.4ppts, a +0.6ppt swing from Q4's drag. Main pluses are in health (PBS effect), housing (rents), education, alcohol & tobacco (excise), transport, recreation (domestic hols), finance & insurance services (Nov rate hike), food (drought). Minuses include clothing & household goods (discount sales).

UK March M4 money supply up 12.8 pct year-on-year; M4 lending up 12.7 bln stg (AFX News)

The Bank of England said provisional estimates for M4 money, a broad measure of money supply, showed a rise of 1 pct in March from February on a seasonally adjusted basis, for a 12.8 pct year-on-year rise. The figures for February are above forecasts of analysts polled by Thomson Financial News who had expected a more moderate monthly rise of 0.8 pct and an annual rise of 12.5 pct.
