The Dow Jones industrial average rose 16 points, or 0.13%, to 13,192. The S&P 500 Index gained 2 points, or 0.21%, to 1,405. The Nasdaq Composite climbed 10 points, or 0.34%, to 3,021.
In the macroeconomic domain, US trade deficit narrowed more than anticipated in June to $42.92 billion. In separated data, initial jobless claims fell 6,000 to 361,000 in the week ended Aug 4 versus 370,000 expected.
European markets moved higher, with the Stoxx Europe 600 up 0.4%. Crude-oil futures rose 0.7% to $93.98 a barrel, while gold edged up 0.2% to $1,618 an ounce.
