In June, retail sales were down for the third month in a row. The abating pressures on prices played a role, but a limited one. Weakness is across the board. The resilience of private consumption in late-2011 and early-2012 is coming to an end, unsurprisingly. The depressed labour market is weighing on households’ income and confidence.
