Overview

Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen said in an interview in today's Politiken that the government has a plan for how Denmark could make its way into the euro. The plan includes meeting the requirements of the Socialist People's party (SF) to secure the party's backing for a Yes vote. In the interview, the Danish PM suggests that the vote would not be held until 2010. He points out that Ireland would first have to accept the Lisbon Treaty, which would "probably" then take effect as of 1 January 2010. On a similar note, SF Chairman Villy Søvndal is reported as saying, in the Børsen daily, that he could not imagine a euro vote being held until 2010, at the earliest. This seems to rule out the possibility of a euro vote this year.
