Prime minister Yasuo Fukuda yesterday resigned after less than a year in office. Contrary to indications in some press headlines today Fukuda's resignation was really not a major surprise. The very unpopular Fukuda was expected to resign eventually to leave room for a new prime minister to prepare the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) for the next general election to be held before September 2009. That said the timing of the resignation was a surprise coming less than a month after a major cabinet reshuffle and just after the presentation of the governments stimulus package last week.
