Forex Glossary

Market maker

A broker/dealer or bank that maintains a firm bid and ask price in a given security by standing ready, willing and able to buy or sell at publicly quoted prices. Forex market participants display bid and offer prices for each currency pair, and if these prices are met, they will immediately buy or sell from their own accounts. Market makers are very important to maintain liquidity and efficiency for the particular securities that they operate. Primary market makers in Forex are the largest investment banks, followed by smaller banks, investment firms and broker/dealers.
