Discretionary Trading

When a trader uses his/her judgment and decision making to execute trades, it's referred to as discretionary trading. Opposite to mechanical trading where the executing is not an option but rather mandatory.

In managed accounts, the term sometimes refers to a type of account in which an individual or organization, other than the person in whose name the account is carried, exercises trading authority to make trading decisions on the clients behalf.
