Forex Glossary

Breakout

The point when the exchange rate rises above a resistance level or drops below a level of support. In other words, it's a technical scenario in which a currency pair exits a pre-existing pattern, such as a range, triangle or channel. A breakout is taken as a buy or sell indicator by technical analysts for it signifies a continuation move.
