The stock market indices had an interesting session today. The day started out with very choppy, back-and-forth-type action, they consolidated above the line, and then just before the lunch hour, they took off and ran steadily all afternoon. A little late pullback brought them off the highs slightly, but it was a fantastic start to the week.
Net on the day, the Dow was up 117.52 at 17,891.16. The S&P 500 was up 16.13 at 2081.43. The Nasdaq 100 was up 40.00 at 4381.30.
Advance-declines were 19 to 11 positive on the New York Stock Exchange, and 16 to 11 positive on the Nasdaq. Up/down volume was 5 to 4 positive on New York, total volume of 3.7 billion shares traded. The Nasdaq traded 1.8 billion shares and had a 11 to 8 positive volume ratio.
TheTechTrader.com board was mixed. Priceline Inc. (PCLN) was up 13.03 to 1356.69, Google Inc. (GOOG) up 5.20 to 698.21, Amazon.com Inc. (AMZN) up a whopping 24.26 to 683.85, and Netflix, Inc. (NFLX) 3.08 to 93.11. Apple Inc. (AAPL) was down a dime to 93.64.
Baidu, Inc. (BIDU), under investigation in the death of a student, dropped 15.39 to 178.91, while Facebook, Inc. (FB) popped 1.00 to 118.58, and First Solar, Inc. (FSLR) fell 99 cents to 54.85.
Tesla Motors, Inc. (TSLA) gained 1.04 to 241.80.
Other gainers of note included Sarepta Therapeutics, Inc. (SRPT), up 3.73 to 17.92, and Intrexon Corporation (XON) up 82 cents to 27.55.
The only point-plus losers on our board were 3D Systems Corporation (DDD), down 1.11 to 16.58 and Targa Resources Corp. (TRGP), in the oil sector, down 1.54 to 38.92.
Checking the TheTechTrader.com percent-gain leaderboard, Genworth Financial, Inc. (GNW) gained 63 cents to 4.06, or 18%, on 23.5 million shares. Keryx Biopharmaceuticals Inc. (KERX), a new swing trade of ours, climbed 52 cents to 5.96, or 10%, on 2.7 million shares, reaching as high as 6.07. Mitek Systems, Inc. (MITK) ran up 66 cents to 8.06, or 9%, on 2.7 million shares, reaching a new, multi-year high at 8.33.
The VelocityShares 3x Inv Natural Gas ETN (DGAZ) stair-stepped 1.94 to 17.58, or 12.4%, on 3.4 million shares.
Among other gainers, CEVA Inc. (CEVA) was up 3.48 to 26.54, NewLink Genetics Corporation (NLNK) up 1.41 to 17.61, United States Steel Corp. (X) up 1.19 to 20.30, Sturm, Ruger & Co. Inc. (RGR) 3.51 to 67.54, and Smith & Wesson Holding Corporation (SWHC) 1.01 to 22.84.
The Velocity Shares 3x Inverse Crude Oil ETN (DWTI) bounced around all day and closed up 6.10 to 95.29. The Pro Shares Ultra Short Bloomberg Crude Oil (SCO) was on the same bumpy ride, up 4.49 to 96.15.
Stepping back and reviewing the hourly chart patterns, the indices started the day strong, consolidated for most of the morning, and ran in the afternoon for a nice start to the week.
