The stock market indices had a very sloppy, choppy, low-volume, mixed session to start the week. The day started out with a little pop to the upside, a sharp pullback, they backed and filled into coils, and tried to rally midday. The S&P 500 made new highs for the rally at 2043, but the Nasdaq 100 couldn’t get through the morning highs, and they rolled over hard late afternoon, only to bounce sharply in the last hour, but that didn’t hold, and when they failed at resistance, they rolled over into the close, and bounced just in the last few minutes to finish off the lows.

Net on the day, the Dow was up 19.66 at 17,535.39, 48 points off the highs, and a similar amount off the low, so mid-range. The S&P 500 was up 1.11 to 2037.05, 6 points off the low and 5 points off the high. The Nasdaq 100 was down 7.47 to 4398.07, just 5 points off the low and 29 points off the high.

Advance-declines were 17 to 13 positive on the New York Stock Exchange, and 15 to 12 negative on the Nasdaq. Up/down volume was flat, but positive on New York, total volume of 2.7 billion shares traded. The low volume for the NYSE occurred because the European markets were closed today. The Nasdaq traded 1 1/3 billion shares and had a 7 to 6 negative volume ratio.

TheTechTrader.com board was narrowly mixed across the board. Priceline.com (PCLN), the big loser today, was down 14.16 to 1287.03, Google Inc. (GOOG) down 1.77 to 733.53, Apple Inc. (AAPL) down just .48 cents to 105.19, Amazon.com Inc. (AMZN) 3.08 to 570.87, but Netflix, Inc. (NFLX) managed to gain 2.85 to 101.21.

Baidu, Inc. (BIDU) closed up 31 cents to 185.17, Facebook, Inc. (FB) up 64 cents to 113.69, but First Solar, Inc. (FSLR) closed flat, but down just 6 cents to 68.40.

Tesla Motors, Inc. (TSLA) had an uphill battle all day, and closed up 2.51 to 230.25. Shutterstock, Inc. (SSTK) popped midday and then just kept on going, up 1.00 to 35.58.

Other than that there were no stocks up or down as much as a point today.

Checking the TheTechTrader.com percent-gain leaderboard, MediciNova Inc. (MNOV) jumped 52 cents to 6.34, or 9%. Avon Products Inc. (AVP) bounced 36 cents to 4.64, or 9%, on 9 million shares.

Alder Biopharmaceuticals Inc. (ALDR) had a great day on strong drug news, up 8.52 to 25.70, on 15 million shares, 1900% more volume than average. The first gains were in the furst hour, hour and a half, and then they went sideways and coiled all day, but the consolidation was a good one and could set up for higher levels. ACADIA Pharmaceuticals Inc. (ACAD) ran 3.50 to 23.81, or 17%, on 13 million shares, and traded as high as 25.48, 634% more volume than average. Finish Line Inc. (FINL) popped 2.32 to 21.39, or 12%, on 3.6 million shares.

Among other gainers, Qlik Technologies, Inc. (QLIK), on takeover rumors, was up 2.44 to 29.13, and Cal-Maine Foods, Inc. (CALM) up 4.39 to 54.51.

The Velocity Shares 3x Long Natural Gas ETN (UGAZ) closed at 23.26, up 1.58 as natural gas jumped today.

Stepping back and reviewing the hourly chart patterns, the indices had a consolidation day. It was a wild, swinging day, with the Nasdaq 100 going between 4394 to as high as 4418 and closing at 4398, and the S&P 500 going between a low of 2032 and a high of 2043, closing at 2037.

It was kind of a mixed day, so we’ll have to see what the market does tomorrow. However, there is some concern about the hourly chart patterns during a potential rollover here. Will the market hold tomorrow, or will they rollover and crack. It’s going to be an important day, in my opinion.
