The stock market indices had a really good session, although they started out with a pop, and consolidated all day on a low-volume day. In the afternoon, they rallied off support as support held three different occasions, and moved steadily into the last half hour before a late pullback on rumors of a credible threat to New York pulled the market back, until the late bounce into the close.

Net on the day, the Dow was up 165.65 at 17,417.27. The S&P 500 was up 17.82 to 2038.97, 4 points off its high. The Nasdaq 100 was up 28.70 to 4589.26, 7 points off its high.

Advance-declines were better than 3 to 1 positive on New York Stock Exchange and 9 to 5 positive on Nasdaq. Up/down volume was 4 1/2 to 1 positive on New York, and the most volume all year at 3.5 billion shares. The Nasdaq traded 1.5 billion shares and had a 2 to 1 negative volume ratio.

United States Steel Corp. (X) bounced 68 cents to 9.10.

Stepping back and reviewing the hourly chart patterns, the indices started out with a pop, pullback and consolidated all morning, in the midafternoon they started to run, broke out and confirmed the S&P 500, which was a bit stronger today, with the Nasdaq 100 having a late surge as well. They couldn't get through 4600 and backed off as well just before the close, but the last ten minutes they did rebound and close with a solid close.

Hope you have a nice holiday!
