The stock market indices had a tough session, but managed to claw their way back to mixed at the end of the day. The day started out with a big gap down, and most of the losses were early on. After reaching the session lows within an hour, they bounced, pulled back midday, bounced again early afternoon to new highs, backed off, and reversed right at the close

Net on the day, it was a consolidation session, and the Dow was up 27.73 at 17,758.21, 100 points off the low. The S&P 500 was up 3.14 to 2081.72, 12 points off the low. The Nasdaq 100 was down 13.89 to 4641.73, 25 points off the low.

Advance-declines were 17 to 13 positive on New York Stock Exchange and closed flat on Nasdaq. Up/down volume was 20 to 17 positive on New York, with total volume of 3 3/4 billion shares. Nasdaq traded 1 3/4 billion shares, and had a 4 to 3 negative volume ratio.

TheTechTrader.com board was mixed. There were several gainers and losers. Priceline.com (PCLN) was up 12.39 to 1323.54, Google Inc. (GOOG) up 3.43 to 728.32, Amazon.com Inc. (AMZN) up 4.19 to 659.68, Netflix, Inc. (NFLX) 2.84 to 112.70, but Apple Inc. (AAPL) dropped 3.80 to 116.77.

Tesla Motors, Inc. (TSLA) lost 8.83 to 216.50.

Facebook, Inc. (FB) was up 1.42 to 107.91, Heron Therapeutics, Inc. (HRTX) up 1.23 to 29.32, and Intra-Cellular Therapies, Inc. (ITCI) 4.19 to 55.69.

On the downside, CyberArk Software, Ltd. (CYBR) was down 4.28 to 40.50, Fitbit Inc. (FIT) down 1.54 to 35.92, First Solar, Inc. (FSLR), in a weak solar sector, 2.52 to 55.87, JinkoSolar Holding Co., Ltd. (JKS) 2.33 to 23.05, Weight Watchers International, Inc. (WTW) 1.16 to 22.54, and Prothena Corporation (PRTA) 2.19 to 58.93.

Checking the TheTechTrader.com percent-gain leaderboard, TrovaGene, Inc. (TROV) climbed 75 cents to 5.35, or 16%. TETRA Technologies, Inc. (TTI) bounced 96 cents to 8.80, or 12%, on 2.7 million shares.

SciClone Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (SCLN) jumped 1.67 to 9.66, or 21%, on 2.3 million shares. Bellicum Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (BLCM) gained 3.08 to 19.84, or 18%, on 2 million shares. Rackspace Hosting, Inc. (RAX) advanced 3.24 to 30.33, or 12%, on 11.4 million shares.

Stepping back and reviewing the hourly chart patterns, the indices were down at the opening, bounced around all morning, tried to rally mid-afternoon, backed off, and closed mixed.
