Last month we warned increasing confrontation between major central banks was likely to slow-down then temporarily reverse the USD normalisation process.

So far that view has proven wrong, with Fed dissatisfaction with USD strength easily side-lined by surprisingly aggressive policy stances at both the BoJ and ECB. Indeed, if Q3 was best described as an ‘uneasy policy maker truce’, Q4 might be remembered as ‘breaking the cease-fire”

We that while latest BoJ policy shots make it difficult to justify short USD/JPY (we forecast end-December 118.0), they are not obstacle to a correction higher in EUR/USD given currently stretched positioning. Indeed triggers such as stronger dovish Fed rhetoric or end-of-year window dressing as potential catalysts in the coming week.

We remain long EUR/USD as a trade recommendation and now also recommend EUR/JPY longs into year-end.

In its portfolio, CA maintains a long EUR/USD position targeting 1.31.
