The unemployment rate was unchanged at 6.7% in June, for the fourth consecutive month, standing at a twenty-year low. The German labour market should benefit further from the current recovery.

  • In June, the jobless rate was unchanged at 6.7%, thus standing at a twenty-year low.

  • Nonetheless unemployment increased by 9K, up for the second consecutive month. Surveys were indicating that job conditions remained tight in June. For instance the Flash composite PMI employment index remained above the 50-threshold which separates contraction from expansion for the eight consecutive month in June though declining 1.2 points to 51.8, down from 53.0 in May, the highest level since December 2011.

  • In addition, employment (published with one-month lag) increased over the month in May, up 9K, recording the smallest increase since November 2013. It was nonetheless up 0.9% y/y in May, accelerating from 0.5% twelve months ago (see chart).

  • All in all, the German labour market seems to be benefiting from the current recovery. As mentioned by the Labour office, the job market is in good shape. The stability of the employment situation should back household confidence and boost their real disposable income. According to GfK consumer confidence survey released last week, the mood of German consumers was notably buoyant in June. Household confidence index was up to 8.6 in June and is forecast at 8.9 in July, a three-year high. After a period of stabilization over the past four months, it was thus up again. Indeed, according to GfK survey, the current focus of consumers in view of economic developments is predominantly on general domestic conditions such as labor market situation, propensity to invest and inflation.
